Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse
Norfolk’s wonderful museum of rural life and the Workhouse
This fifty-acre site with its magnificent Georgian workhouse invites you to explore two centuries of life on the land. There are recreations of shops and homes, extensive displays on farming and village life and the popular Collections Gallery – a real treasure trove. The workhouse has a fascinating story to tell that hits home for all ages. On the traditional working farm you can get up close to rare breed animals, take a cart ride and have a go at milking. There are lovely countryside walks and the large courtyard is perfect for picnics and watching the world go by.
Beautiful, eclectic and thought-provoking this museum is a great day out come rain or shine. with family activities each and every day of the Norfolk school holidays, workhouse trails, an orchard with over 30 varieties of English apples, major event days (including Village at War and Apple Day). Gressenhall also offers discounts for groups.

Other good things to do near by
Gressenhall is ten minutes by car from North Elmham where you can visit the remains of a Norman chapel and castle, and find out about the earlier Saxon cathedral. Mid Norfolk Railway offers trips on heritage diesel trains between Dereham and Wymondham. Dereham Station itself is a fine and beautifully restored, mid-Victorian station. Thursday is market day in Dereham and St Nicholas’ Church, which is home to St Withburga’s Well, is worth a visit.
