An illustrated talk on the history of Circus in the UK its development and its internationalisation from the early 1770s onwards tracing the first circuses of Astley, Hughes and others to the pinnacle of Victorian showmen such as Lord George Sanger, Barnum and others.
Hear how circus developed in the United Kingdom including the development of the Big Top the history of Astley’s Ampitheatre in London and how circus became an international language of performance and exhibition.
Professor Vanessa Toulmin is Director of the National Fairground and Circus Archive in Sheffield and an Advisory Board Member of Circus 250.
